I'm happy to be alive today because of happy security guards.
Going through airports can be particularly unpleasant. I have found that one of the best ways to try to make it a much less painful experience is to be nice to the staff, especially security (and check-in staff). It doesn't take you any more time or effort, and if you're making their job easier by having everything ready and being happy to comply with whatever they need, then everyone is happy and generally you walk away feeling a lot better. Happy security guards are lots of fun to talk to, and often have very interesting stories if neither of you are busy.
