I'm happy to be alive today because of games that encourage you to be a scum bucket.
Who knew being evil could be so much fun?

Day #31
I'm happy to be alive today because of historical re-enactments.
Far too much fun to be missed.
Especially when there's fighting involved.

Day #30
I'm happy to be alive today because of sitting around and having fun with your Mom.
We may not always see eye to eye, and we definitely have had a few ideological differences that might mean we'll never have that perfect, never-marred relationship, but it's comforting to know that, no matter how bad things get, we can still sit down and talk and have fun.

I'm happy to be alive today because of showers.
They are my second favourite part of the day (the first being sleeping).

Day #28
I'm happy to be alive today because of things that don't mean to be funny, but are.
Romance novels, 'serious' movies, and conversations made with completely straight faces, innocent of the implications of their words.
These things, which bring a smile to your face just when you least expect it, are things to be treasured.

Day #27
I'm happy to be alive today because of Kookaburras.
Even living in Australia doesn't guarantee that you'll see one all that often, although depending on where you live, you may hear one in the ungodly hours of the morning. So when you get to watch one for a good ten minutes, it's kind of fun.

Day #26
I'm happy to be alive today because of the freedoms that I can take for granted.
Sometimes I am astounded by some of the things that I take for granted.
Today I would like to appreciate them instead, and all the people who fought for them.

I'm happy to be alive today because of going to the movies with your family.
Because sometimes there are jokes that you can only make with the people who have known you from birth.

Day #23
I'm happy to be alive today because of unpacking.
It can be fun, and it can suck. But there it is.
My time zones are a bit mixed up at the moment, so I may or may not have missed a day or otherwise just gotten confused. The last post was actually put up via 'scheduling' since I was going to be on a plane for pretty much all of yesterday, so I think I'm good.

Day #22
I'm happy to be alive today because of music.
Well, most specifically the music that I have with me, since music that I don't have with me is pretty useless to me when I need it. I like listening to music for many purposes: to pass the time; to create background music; to drown out that annoying person on the bus who just doesn't stop talking, etcetera. The right music for the right situation can have an almost magical quality: it lifts you up right out of the 'normal' world and just makes everything better.
It also helps to alleviate road rage.

Day #21
I'm happy to be alive today because of happy security guards.
Going through airports can be particularly unpleasant. I have found that one of the best ways to try to make it a much less painful experience is to be nice to the staff, especially security (and check-in staff). It doesn't take you any more time or effort, and if you're making their job easier by having everything ready and being happy to comply with whatever they need, then everyone is happy and generally you walk away feeling a lot better. Happy security guards are lots of fun to talk to, and often have very interesting stories if neither of you are busy.

Day #20
I'm happy to be alive today because of chess.
Win or lose, if you go into any game with the goal of having fun, then it's a pretty sure thing that you'll succeed. Today, I played my first game of chess. And then my second game. Tomorrow we have plans for at least one more game, which I aim to thoroughly enjoy, exactly as I did with the first two.

Day #19
I'm happy to be alive today because of mustard.
Seriously, I did now know good mustard until someone introduced me to it. I was used to pretty much three kinds (all of which are good, just for different sorts of tastes): French, English, and powdered. Then we went on a trip to Canada and someone plonked down this bright yellow, awful-looking stuff that just kind of grabbed my mouth and exploded with love.
If I can't find this stuff back in Australia I shall be most disappointed.

Day #18
I'm happy to be alive today because of warmth.
The contrast between warm and cold can be read into with laughable ease. For example: some people like the cold, and some people like heat (you can't please everyone); sometimes you never really realize how cold/warm it is until you experience the other temperature (you don't appreciate what you have until you don't have it/you don't you don't know what you're missing if you don't give things a go), and so on. So I'm not really going to go into that (well, any more than I just did).
I'm more of a cold person myself, even though I do get cold easily. But my reasoning goes that it's easier to warm up (you can put on more layers, or get a hot water bottle, etc.) than it is to cool down (there are only so many layers you can take off). But there are few things more cozy than coming into a warm house after being in the cold for just a little too long.
And that's about as deep as I'm going to be tonight.

Day #17
I'm happy to be alive today because of old books.
I should clarify the 'old' by using the example of Dracula, since that's what I'm currently reading. My specific reasoning is this: with many books published around or before that time, the language and syntax used were practically made for reading aloud, and I am a complete sucker for books that make you want to find someone to snuggle up next to and read aloud to them. It's quite the weakness, I must say.
But hey, don't our weaknesses make us human?

Day #16
I'm happy to be alive today because of a good photograph.
I'm not talking about any one shot in particular: what I mean is that shot that you take after an impossible amount of terrible ones that are just that little out of focus, or you moved the camera, or the subject moved and has now left, and so on and so forth. If you've ever tried to get that one perfect shot, you'll probably know what I mean.
But every now and then, there's one shot that makes up for the huge pile of awful ones. And it's all worth it.

Day #15
I'm happy to be alive today because of board games.
We don't really play many board games ( we have a game of monopoly that has been going for months, but it doesn't see much visitation right now), since when we do actually end up sitting down and deciding to play something ( as verses just sitting around and talking), it usually ends up being cards. But board games can be lots of fun, although if one person is even slightly better than everyone else, then they generally end up schooling everyone every time and that isn't so fun. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that anything that brings you together, as a family, as a group of friends or just as strangers with similar hobbies, it's something to savour.
So go hug someone, or something already.
Be happy.

Day #14
I'm happy to be alive today because of sitting around and talking over the dinner table.
My family seems to have a lot of traditions: making sales staff laugh; loving food; throwing napkins, but possibly the best one is our dinner conversations. We all sit and eat dinner together, which is a rare thing these days, and we can easily turn any meal into one that takes several hours for a single course. We talk about our days, problems that came up, things we thought were interesting, thoughts that sparked off of something someone else said, pretty much anything. It's one thing that I deefinitely wouldn't trade for anything, and especially not for the 'normal dinners' that so many other people have, where everyone kind of grabs food when they're huhngry and then vanishes, or sits in front of the tv and don't say a word. I know that it might not work for everyone, but I'm glad it works for us.

Day #13
I'm happy to be alive today because of sales staff.
Or whatever you want to call it. Basically, all the background you need to know for this one is that my family, specifically my sister and I, have a habit of making sales staff laugh. We once reduced one particular woman to a state where tears were falling from her eyes because she was laughing so hard. We don't set out to accomplish this, by any means, but it does seem to happen fairly consistently.
And happy sales staff are fun people to talk to, and fun to muck about a bit with, and generally just make you a lot happier as well. So today, I'm happy to be alive because of nice sales staff who are willing to talk and put up with our indecisiveness and just us in the whole.
Night, all!

Day #12
I'm happy to be alive today because of under-floor heating.
Hey, after yesterday I needed to do something not so meaningful.
And under the floor heating is just so lovely and, I suspect, the best way to heat. Bare feet all year! How cool is that?

Day #11
I'm happy to be alive today because of my Aunt.
I always knew that she was a great woman, but today I saw a fraction of the hearts that she touched and deeply affected, and all for the better. She did a great many things during her life, and approached them all with a tremendous passion. I think if I could boil down everything she taught me to as essential a message as possible, then it would be this: to love with all your heart, and to throw yourself into your passions with everything you have.
I admire her greatly, and know that she would want me to always be myself, no matter who that person is, and to pay no attention to anyone who says that I can't do something. I will always treasure what little time I had with her, and try to be my best for her.
If you're reading this, please do me a favor: go and hug someone you love, and tell them how important they are.

Day #10
I'm happy to be alive today because of hot apple cider.
Seriously, it's like an apple pie in a cup. How did I not know of this before?
I know there have been quite a few food-related posts recently, but if there's one thing you should probably know about me, it's that I love food. Hopelessly, madly and forever. I may need to eat less of it every so often, but nothing will taint my love of delicious food. So you may be seeing a few more posts about food to come. It's something important to me and my family, so it features highly in my happy-inducing list. I'll do my best to keep from overlapping, at least obviously.
But anyway, I had my first cup of hot apple cider today, and although I don't think I would be able to drink it very often, it definitely hit the spot today. It helped that it was nearing freeze-your-tits-off cold, which always necessitates a hot drink, in my opinion.
It's not so good when the cider gets cold, in my opinion, whereupon it just tastes like apple juice. Since I'm not a fan of most juices, you can imagine how pleased I was to learn this.
Still, worth it.
Have a good day, and lovely and relaxing night!

Day #8
I'm happy to be alive today because of cousins.
Today, for the first time in my life, I met one of my cousins. Given that he is about three years old, it was not without some excitement and chaos - surely essential ingredients for a first encounter. We live on opposite sides of the globe, so opportunities to see each other will be few and far between, as is the case for most of my family. Even though the reason we're all in the same place at the same time is an incredibly sad one which I'd rather didn't exist, sometimes it's good to have someone, for example a very bright young cousin to help you remember that there are always some good things to see if you look.
I'm in a bit of a different time zone than my normal one at the moment, so updates may vary as to when on each day they come, but I will do my best to keep on track.
Hope you're having a good day!

Day #7
I'm happy to be alive today because of food.
Well, specifically comfort food. The kind that, no matter how terrible your day was, will make you feel warm and safe and like everything will be alright.
I find that a lot of my comfort food comes from my childhood: pizza (and it has to be exactly the way my Dad made it, of course); spaghetti; all sorts of food that, should I ever feel particularly lonely and need some way to feel better (with the added bonus of not having to admit to anyone how I'm feeling at that precise moment in time), comfort food is the way to go.
It can make anywhere feel like home - and that is nothing to sneer at.
Snuggle up and enjoy life!

Day #6
I'm happy to be alive today because of homemade peanut butter cups.
Hey, I never said these would be profound, did I?
Anyway, these things are delicious. And addictive. And excruciatingly easy to make. Seriously. If you have cupcake 'cups' (also called patty pans in some areas of the world), chocolate and peanut butter, then all you really need is a stove (and a small pot) and a fridge. Bam: peanut butter cups.
Delicious - and they definitely taste better than store bought ones as well.
Anyway, so these nummy little things are why I'm happy to be alive today.
So go enjoy something delicious and bad for you and be happy too!

Day #5
I'm happy to be alive today because of cats.
I've grown up for most of my life with at least one cat in our family, so I've become quite used to the creatures, although you could probably argue that one can never be used to cats as a whole since they're hardly all alike.
I've known very few cats who aren't affectionate, soft and (usually) always happy to sit on you and let you cuddle them - although there are always exceptions to the rule. Their very presence makes me happy; I just can't help it. Wherever I picture myself ending up, I just can't see a happy home without a couple of cats.
So, for today, they're my reason for being happy.
Technically, I haven't missed a day in my time zone, so I'm sticking with that. Wednesday's might be a bit iffy since I'll be on a place for a vast majority of it, but I'll do my best.
See you around!

Day #4
I'm happy to be alive today because of sleep.
I'm not sure how much I need to explain this one, so I'll keep it short:
Sleep is one of my great loves: we have fought many times, and I'd like to think we're going through a good patch in our relationship.
Unfortunately, sleep isn't always a constant - sometimes you would love to be asleep; would give anything to be so, but it just won't come at all. Other times, you're the one standing sleep up, pulling all-nighters or just generally staving it off for whatever reason. So even though sleep is a very jealous, petty creature, I forgive it wholeheartedly whenever it treats me right.
I hope that doesn't set me up for any similar relationships with actual people later down the line.
Either way, I'm going to go see if it likes me tonight, since it's just ticked past two in the morning where I am, and I can hear it calling my name. And it has such a lovely voice.
So have a good night, and may sleep visit you (the wanton creature that it is) for a lovely jaunt!

Day #3
I'm happy to be alive today because of books.
I should say right now that I am a big fan of escapism. It is a wonderful thing to be able to disappear into another world for as long as you please (or, if you're the type of person who only ever reads a book once, as long as it takes until you finish that book), and to have something that you can rely on, in a sense, even if it 'make believe'.
That's not to say that I think you shouldn't ever do anything or fight for something in the real world, but I don't think that there's anything wrong with a little harmless immersing yourself into something fantastical and forgetting about all the problems that make you want to curl up into a little ball and cry (but why don't the unicorns love me, Mommy? Why?); even if it's just for a few minutes.
So, what I'm trying to get at in this very long-winded and probably very poorly worded meandering way is this: reading is fantastic. I've loved it for a very long time, and it actually makes me sad when I meet people who don't like to, especially when they have a valid reason (are exceptionally dyslexic, for example). Now, I know that I hate it with a passion when people say things like that to me ('ohh, you don't like spinach? That makes me so sad! I must make you love spinach!'), so I generally keep my mouth shut about it, and keep my apparently salacious love of books to myself (I should probably note here that I don't do anything salacious to my books, in case you got the wrong impression there.).
But I digress. My love for books knows few bounds (except autobiographical books, which for some reason I simply cannot find room for in my heart of hearts): reference books; fantasy (and many of its subgenres); science fiction; detective; romances that don't mean to be funny but which are secretly hilarious; cookbooks; I like pretty much most kinds of books.
Indeed: I am a shameless nerd.
I also have a slightly more secret reason why I love books: they are a very, very good distraction. And for someone for whom (ooh, more terrible wording!) clinical depression runs in the family, that is a very handy thing to have.
So I think it may even be fair to say that books have saved my life.
So if you'll excuse me, I think I have to go and say 'Thank you; I love you forever' to each and every one of my books. I may be a while.
In the meantime, enjoy yourselves!
